The government of Ghana has strongly condemned the recent military takeover in Guinea-Bissau and is calling for the swift restoration of constitutional order.
Ghana described the coup as a “brazen disruption” of the electoral process — one that has blocked the announcement of election results and derailed the country’s democratic path.
In its statement, Ghana urged that any election-related disagreements be resolved through peaceful, transparent and lawful means — not by force.
The government also emphasized the need to protect the safety and rights of civilians and foreign nationals in Guinea-Bissau, particularly those affiliated with the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission. Their security, freedom of movement and independence must be guaranteed immediately, Ghana said.
Finally, Ghana reiterated its full support for both ECOWAS and the African Union (AU) as they work with other stakeholders to coordinate a response — calling on all involved to protect democratic governance and constitutional rule.
