President John Dramani Mahama has instructed the Ministry of Finance to disburse GH¢1 billion to settle payments owed to contractors dating back to 2017, with the full payout expected before Christmas

The announcement was made on Sunday, December 21, 2025, during a sod-cutting ceremony for the Sunyani–Atronie–Acherensua Road Project in the Bono Region, part of the government’s Big Push infrastructure strategy.

According to President Mahama, the funds will be used to clear outstanding certified works carried out by contractors over several years. He emphasised that ongoing audits will verify all claims so that only legitimate payments are made.

“I have directed the Finance Minister, Dr Ato Forson, to release GH¢1 billion to settle arrears owed to contractors since 2017 before Christmas,” the President stated, adding that families of deceased contractors should also come forward to claim any owed amounts.

President Mahama encouraged contractors to promptly submit all necessary documents to ensure timely payment, warning that delays in documentation will slow their payments.

He also highlighted that resources under the Big Push programme have been earmarked to help revive and complete stalled infrastructure projects across the country.

At the event, Dormaahene Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Dr Agyemang Badu II urged strict oversight of public works to prevent poor quality construction.
